Our people their stories: Maureen Mann
The monthly Our people, their stories: oral histories of Northern Tasmania talks presented by the QVMAG Friends reveal the personal stories of a diverse range of people who enrich the lives of our community.
I NOW CALL TASMANIA HOME
with MAUREEN MANN
Join us to hear where Maureen's love of books and travel have taken her, especially with the challenges of a young family. She will also discuss the experience of raising a child from a different ethnic background in Tasmania in the 1980's.
Maureen was born in Sydney. She grew up and was educated there and later in the UK. Maureen returned Australia in 1973 and moved to Tasmania in 1978, after years of contract teaching. Adding librarianship as a mature-age student to her teaching qualifications expanded her employment opportunities.
Maureen and her husband Dennis have 3 children: Anthony and Catherine, and Lawrence adopted while living in Western Samoa. As parents Maureen and Dennis taught their children to travel, and now two of them live permanently overseas. So of course, the need to travel continues, but they keep returning to this beautiful island.
While working fulltime Maureen was involved with many community groups, especially in the literacy and history fields. In retirement little has changed. She has a long connection with the Children’s Book Council of Australia Tas Branch, being a judge and then coordinating the Book of the Year Awards. She also volunteered for the National Trust Tas on committee and in the library. As a teacher librarian she has been involved in many association activities and in 2006 she was honoured to be named Tasmanian Teacher Librarian of the Year.
Maureen has been a long-time QVMAG Friend, serving on the Committee, and a QVMAG volunteer since retiring. She also loves researching Tasmania’s convict past for the Female Convicts Research Centre and other research groups. An important relaxation for her is embroidery.
