Carving conversations with Carol Russell

Join Carol as she carves and chats about her craft. She’ll demonstrate various techniques and talk about her process whilst whittling some butter knives, spoons and small sculptures using salvaged material.

Set to the backdrop of the exhibition Jimmy Possum: an unbroken tradition, Russel’s wood carving art practice repurposes otherwise discarded timber, something that aligns to the Jimmy Possum tradition of ‘making do’ with materials at hand.

Carol is full of tips of tricks to help you in your own work or can advise you on how to get started.

This event is a drop-in session between 12.30 to 3.30pm on 4 February 2023. Enjoy this session as a short experience, or stay for the full duration; the choice is yours.

About the artist

Carol Russell is a self-taught woodworker who has been making pieces for most of her adult life. She began in 1987 with small furniture projects and antique restoration, spending time in workshops and gleaning what she could from craftspeople who were prepared to share their knowledge. She spent several years on small commission projects, exhibiting her work in galleries in Brisbane, Canberra and Sydney. She recently moved back to Tasmania

Carol became interested in teaching the craft herself. In 1997 she began teaching woodwork at Carbatec, a supplier of woodworking tools in Brisbane, where she was employed to create a woodworking school. The Australian Wood Review have published several of her articles on tools and woodworking techniques. She works full time teaching and creating unique pieces of tableware from Australia’s forest timbers.
