Alice's Wonderland

Displayed at the Museum at Inveresk from 9 December 2017 until 29 April 2018. 

Children are invited to journey down a rabbit hole to explore the way they perceive and make sense of the world around them in this new, hands-on exhibition based on Lewis Carroll’s well-known Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.  

Just as Alice’s curiosity led her to follow the white rabbit down the rabbit hole, children can let curiosity guide their way through a series of educational exhibits which introduce optics and illusions, word play, physics and maths. 

Each activity will introduce a range of numeracy, literacy and science concepts in a delightful and playful way. 

The adventure begins at the stream-side knoll where kids can crawl through a rabbit hole then continue to discover surprises of many sizes as they travel throughout the space. 

Originally produced by the Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose, the exhibition won the prestigious American Alliance of Museums’ Excellence in Exhibitions Awards in 2003. Museums Victoria's Scienceworks then developed sixteen new exhibits which aim to develop skills such as number recognition and counting, matching shapes, understanding simple fractions and telling the time on a clock face. This includes the Mad Hatter Tea Party table with maths-themed exhibits and a carpet maze which develops counting and sequencing skills.

Parents and carers can re-familiarise themselves with the popular book’s iconic quirky characters such as Alice, the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter and the Queen of Hearts, through eight ‘Meet the Character’ panels, accompanied by John Tenniel’s original illustrations. There are also labels with extra information to delight and assist carers as they take young children through the exhibit.
