Year of the Dragon soars to QVMAG

Festivities will begin tomorrow at Launceston's Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery in celebration of the 2024 Lunar New Year.

Celebrated by many cultures across the world, the Lunar New Year is recognised as a time for renewal and is a symbol of joy.

With each year featuring a different animal from Chinese zodiac, 2024 will celebrate the year of the Dragon.

As part of this free community celebration, visitors can expect to enjoy Chinese calligraphy stations, Tai Chi classes, family fun craft activities, and tours of the Guan Di Temple exhibition at the Art Gallery at Royal Park.

City of Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood said it was fantastic to see Launceston once again filled with vibrant community celebrations for the Lunar New Year.

"It's great to celebrate the Lunar New Year festivities here at QVMAG with our community," Mayor Garwood said.

"There is something for all ages to experience and enjoy on the day at the Art Gallery and I encourage everyone to make the most of this free community event in the heart of our City as we celebrate the year of the Dragon."

General Manager of Creative Arts and Cultural Services Shane Fitzgerald said the Lunar New Year celebration at QVMAG is one event not to be missed.

"Lunar New Year is a brilliant way to celebrate our islands diverse culture with communities statewide," Fitzgerald said.

"Community activation is an important objective for QVMAG each year, and programs such as this offer a brilliant way to connect our community through the sharing of knowledge."
